The total station is the most full featured surveying instrument currently available on the market today. A total station consists of a theodolite combined with an electronic distance meter or measurer (typically abbreviated as EDM) and a specialized field computer to process raw measurement data and reduce it to horizontal distances and corrected angles. More advanced field computers will also calculate state plane coordinates and elevation data for points in the field and also perform automatic radial layout calculations from raw coordinate data. These raw measurements can also be sent to an optional data collector for later processing. In addition to data collection functionality more robust total station models will often include remote connectivity to an off-site location. These are typically referred to as total station survey systems (TSSS). Robotic total stations add the immensely helpful capability of allowing the user to control the total station via a remote control.
